Purple Hibiscus Blooms In The Garden City

Drama scene from August BOTM event.

The Port Harcourt World Book Capital monthly Book-of-the-Month (BOTM) Discussions and Drama Performance will hold this Sunday 28th September 2014 at the Atlantic Hall, Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt. The Book-of-the-Month for September is Commonwealth Writers’ Prize winner, ‘Purple Hibiscus’ authored by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

To anchor the discussions this month will be Robinson Akpu, On-Air Personality with Rhythm 93.7FM, Port Harcourt and Sharon Fiberesima from the Port Harcourt Writers Hangout, while the University of Port Harcourt Institute of Arts and Theatre will present a live stage performance of an adaptation of the Book-of-the-Month.

‘Purple Hibiscus’ “captures the traumatic moments of a wealthy Nigerian family as it gradually breaks up, mined tragically, on the one hand, by the cruel abuses of a father turned callous by an inexorable, fanatic brand of Catholicism, and on the other, by the familiar brutalities of the murderous military regimes of our recent past”. (Femi Osofisan)
Discussions will kick off at 3pm prompt.
