Last year, the Port Harcourt Book Festival (PHBF) underwent a rebranding which led to a change of name from Garden City Literary Festival to Port Harcourt Book Festival. One of the reasons for the name change was because of the need to widen the content, scope and appeal of the festival. PHBF now appeals to a wider range of people with interests in all kind of books. This change has resulted in an increase in the number people attending the festival and the number of requests from authors to participate in the Festival.
This year’s festival not only takes place during Port Harcourt’s tenure as UNESCO World Book Capital, it is also fully integrated into the World Book Capital programme. The 2014 PHBF is expected to be bigger and better than previous editions.
For the first time ever, opportunities are available for interested authors to host book launch events as part of the PHBF. These events will be included in the festival’s calendar and will be promoted alongside other festival events. Authors can take advantage of the hundreds of book lovers and book-chain practitioners that visit the festival daily.
The organizers will promote the author’s event and provide a venue equipped with seats, public address system and branding for the event. The organizers will assign a coordinator to the event who will liaise with the author to ensure that the event is executed without hitch.
Why you should seize this opportunity.
• PHBF events usually take place at Hotel Presidential, which is one of the most prestigious venues to hold a book launch event. The halls are fully air-conditioned and the hotel provides uninterrupted power supply. The halls are well lit and the ambience is well suited to an event of this nature.
• The PHBF has an average daily attendance of 1000 visitors to the fair and other events. Hosting a book launch during the festival is a wonderful opportunity for authors to capitalize on the crowds to enhance the success of their events.
• Guests, visitors and exhibitors at the PHBF comprise of book lovers, publishers, editors, librarians, booksellers and other practitioners within the book industry as well as journalists. This provides a valuable opportunity for authors to network and build valuable contacts and relationships.
• Organizing a book launch can be quite a tedious process. By taking advantage of this opportunity, authors can leave things like hall bookings, public address systems, refreshment, video and photography and branding to the organizers of the festival and concentrate on inviting their guests and developing the programme of activities for their events.
