Every Children’s Day (May 27) since 2008, Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi reads to school children in a chosen public primary school in the state. Rivers State Reads is organized by the Rainbow Book Club in collaboration with the Rivers State Government.
This year’s edition of Rivers State Reads held at the New Church State School, Degema. The book in focus was ‘Florence Nightingale’ written by Lucy Lethbridge. It told the story of the heroine who, though born into a wealthy family, longed to be a nurse, in the 1830s.
Governor Amaechi began his reading by asking the primary six pupils of New Church State School, Degema ‘what they would like to study in the University’. And then went on to read selected portions of the book. He was flanked by Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi; Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Koko Kalango; Founder of the Rainbow Book Club and Barrister West; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education.
