The Garden City Literary Festival, now the Port Harcourt Book Festival, kicked off in 2008. Initiated by Governor Amaechi of Rivers State the Port Harcourt Book Festival is organized annually by the Rainbow Book Club in Port Harcourt. Hundreds of literary enthusiasts make their way to the Garden City yearly to participate in this six-day event which comprises a book fair, writers’ workshops, diverse literary forums, a symposium, drama performances and other cultural displays. Guest authors in the past have included Nigeria’s Wole Soyinka (Nobel Laureate), Ghana’s Kofi Awonoor, Kenya’s Ngugi wa Thiong’o, American writer Petrina Crockford and Jamaican writer Lindsay Barrett. The festival has also played host to several VIPs in the past including Rev. Jesse Jackson and Chief Emeka Anyaoku. Children are an important part of the festival and special workshops, ‘role model’ reading sessions and scheduled visits to the book fair are part of the events planned for them. Additionally, children are granted an opportunity to showcase their talent on the last day of the festival.
