Get Nigeria Reading again!

Get Nigeria Reading again!

The Rainbow Book Club (RBC) began the Get Nigeria Reading again! campaign in 2005. Since that time, the programme has involved over 1000 students from about 100 schools in Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Lagos States, as well as Abuja.

By 2008, RBC began collaborating with UNESCO on the programme and the campaign now takes place at the UN House in Abuja. It is usually preceded by a writing competition which is assessed by the Association of Nigerian Authors. Special guests are also invited to interact with the children.

Writers who have participated include Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Adichie.  RBC guests of honour have been the former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku (in 2008), the Minister for Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili (in 2009) and the Minister for Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Deizani Alison-Madueke (in 2010).

These role models take time to read to and interact with children.
