Chinua Achebe, honourary member of the Rainbow Book Club, passes on

Professor Achebe, an honourary member of the Rainbow Book Club

, was the keynote speaker at the 2011 Garden City Literary Festival with the theme ‘Literature and Politics’. Due to ill health the Professor could not make it to Port Harcourt but his address was delivered by his son, Dr. Chidi Achebe.

Early in life Achebe became dissatisfied with the portrayal of Africa and Africans in mainstream literature primarily by Europeans. His desire to change this motivated him to write his first and bestselling novel, Things Fall Apart (1958).

A distinguished and accomplished academic, author and social critic, Achebe was the recipient of over 20 honourary doctorates and winner of the Man Booker Prize.

His latest novel, There Was a Country (2012), his personal account of the Nigerian Civil War, was the Rainbow Book Club book of the month for January 2013.

The Rainbow Book Club would miss his support and encouragement.

May his gently soul rest in peace
