The Rainbow Book Club’s “book of the month” for February 2010 is the critically acclaimed debut by Nigerian author Uwem Akpan, entitled: Say You’re One Of Them.
Chosen for Oprah Winfrey’s world-renowned book club last year, this enthralling collection of five short stories recounts the African experience through the eyes of young children. Each tale is set in a different country and explores the erosion of innocence by the realities of life within the backdrop of topical issues such as religion, child prostitution and tribal conflicts.
This book is a must-read for all lovers of literature and Africa. Rave reviews from readers and critics resulted in its winning the Commonwealth Prize for Best First Book (Africa Region) in 2009. One of the most poignant stories, My Parents’ Bedroom, was shortlisted for the Caine Prize in 2007.
The author, Jesuit priest Uwem Akpan, has chosen the Rainbow Book Club’s monthly reading in Port Harcourt as the ideal venue to launch his first promotional tour of Nigeria. It’s a unique opportunity for African readers to meet Father Akpan, who follows in the footsteps of other great writers such as Wole Soyinka and Ngugi Wa Thiong’o in joining forces with Rainbow to raise the profile of literature in the Garden City. The event takes place on Saturday 20th February from 4-6pm at Le Meridien, Ogeyi Place, Port Harcourt.
