SEVEN REASONS TO STEP UP YOUR READING HABIT
Reading is a part of our daily lives; or so we like to think. We read the most recent gossip news on a blog we like to follow, we read the prescription for that new drug we have to take or the fashion piece in our favourite magazine. We believe reading is part of our daily activities, therefore we usually pay very little or no attention when someone speaks on the importance of reading; we make little or no conscious plan to read a book, an article, a memoir etc. We usually pay an obsessive amount of attention to our physical looks. We wonder when we’ve added a pound or two so we make conscious plans on the best time to hit the gym and work on our thighs, arms and belly. But how often do we directly exercise our brains? How often do we keep our minds active and healthy? One of the ways to get this done is by reading. Reading is the exercise and a books is the gym. Now, can you imagine how healthy your brain would look and feel if you exercised it daily?
Here is Rainbow Book Club’s seven reasons to step up your reading game-
A HEALTHY MIND- According to scientist, reading does a lot to keep our brains healthy and active. Reading increases our memory and overall brain function while warding off diseases such as Alzheimer’s, dementia etc. It does this by keeping important parts of the brain active and flexible.
STAYING UPDATED AND INFORMED- Information is power! And Power is a great survival tool. Reading keeps us up-to-date on past, present and future happenings. It keeps us smart and informed.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT-Reading teaches us things we didn’t know about ourselves. Most books help us in our journey to discover who we are and our potentials.
EXPOSURE- Most times, we get to travel to various parts of the world with the book we read. We learn other people’s cultures, values and history from the comfort of our homes. Reading widens our mental capacity as we travel and experience places we may not have been able to afford on our own.
VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT-We learn new words by reading. We improve our vocabulary by exposing our minds to different words and their usage and the easiest way to achieve this is through books.
IMPROVES WRITING SKILLS-Reading a well-written book improves the potential to become better writers. Just like artists influence others, so do writers. Many successful authors gained their expertise by reading the works of others.
DISCIPLINE- After reading this piece, it’s probably going to take a lot for most people to devote time out of their daily activities to read. But the ones that will, would be inculcating in themselves a very important habit of discipline.
